Road to 2028

USA Triathlon Team Kicks Off the LA 2028 Olympic Quadrennial with Strong Performances

It’s what we’ve all been waiting for.

The journey to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games has officially begun for USA Triathlon, with our athletes already making waves in the first races of the 2025 season. From veteran Olympians to rising stars, Team USA has started this new quadrennial with promising results, showcasing our current strength and exciting future.

Silver Success in Abu Dhabi

Team USA continued its relay excellence at the first World Triathlon Championship Series event in Abu Dhabi. The mixed relay team of Morgan Pearson, Taylor Spivey, John Reed, and Erika Ackerlund captured silver, mirroring our podium finish from the Paris 2024 Olympics. With Olympic silver medalists Pearson and Spivey joining forces with Reed and Ackerlund, the team demonstrated remarkable chemistry despite the early season timing.

Racing so soon after an Olympic year presented unique challenges, with athletes either shaking off post-season rust or extending their Olympic year training into the new season. Despite these hurdles, our veterans delivered impressive performances.

Young Stars Shine in Cuba

While our veteran athletes competed in Abu Dhabi, the next generation of Olympic hopefuls made their mark at the Americas Cup race in Havana, Cuba. Members of the USA Triathlon Mallow U25 National Team and Project Podium training group demonstrated their potential with outstanding results.

Braxton Legg earned his first World Triathlon Americas Cup victory, with teammate Blake Bullard joining him on the podium. On the women's side, Jime De La Peña Schott led Team USA with a strong fourth-place finish.

Building Momentum in New Zealand

Just a week later, our athletes took on the World Triathlon Cup Napier in New Zealand. John Reed and Erika Ackerlund made the journey from Abu Dhabi, joining up-and-comer Danielle Orie from USAT's Global Tri training group and Project Podium athletes Sullivan Middaugh, Reese Vannerson, and Keller Norland.

In the women's race, Ackerlund showcased her running prowess with the second-fastest run split of the day, securing fourth place. Orie impressed in her World Cup debut, finishing 14th.

The men's race highlighted Sullivan Middaugh's extraordinary cycling ability, as he powered the chase groups together, averaging over 400 watts during the bike leg. His efforts earned him ninth place, his first World Cup top-10 finish. Reese Vannerson, the 2024 Junior Worlds Silver medalist, continued his consistent excellence with a fifth-place finish, while John Reed secured another top-10 result in tenth. Keller Norland achieved his best World Cup finish to date, coming in 20th and showing continued improvement with each race.

Looking Ahead

The season continues in late March with Americas Cup races in La Paz, Mexico (March 21) and Miami, Florida (March 27), plus a unique indoor World Cup in Lievin, France (March 22).
